# Start with a coding agent

> Paste one prompt into Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, or another coding agent, and it creates, configures, and starts a FrogBot app for you.

A coding agent can do the whole setup for you: check your computer, create the app with the FrogBot skill, and start it. You answer its questions and approve what it wants to run. Open your coding agent in the folder where you want the app, such as your Documents folder, then paste this prompt. The agent creates the app there unless you name another folder, and asks you first if that folder is already another project.

Your coding agent checks your computer, creates the app with the FrogBot skill, and starts it.

Help me set up FrogBot, an open-source AI agent app, on this computer. I am not a programmer. Do the work yourself, explain each step in one short sentence, and stop to ask me when you need something from me.

1. Check that Node.js 24.21 or newer is installed by running node --version. If it is missing or older, give me the link [https://nodejs.org/en/download](https://nodejs.org/en/download), wait until I say it is installed, then check again.
2. Ask me which AI key I have: OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. If I have none, send me to [https://platform.openai.com/api-keys](https://platform.openai.com/api-keys) to create an OpenAI key, and wait.
3. Create the app in the current folder, or in a folder I name. If the current folder is already another project (it has a package.json), ask me where to put it instead and suggest my Documents folder. Use this command:
   npx create-frogbot-app\@latest my-frogbot --yes --ai YOUR\_PROVIDER --agents YOUR\_AGENT
Replace YOUR\_AGENT with the value for the tool you are: codex for Codex, claude for Claude Code, cursor for Cursor, opencode for opencode, copilot for GitHub Copilot, or gemini for Gemini CLI. Replace YOUR\_PROVIDER with openai, anthropic, or google, for the key I have. This command also installs the FrogBot skill into the project. If a my-frogbot folder already exists there, ask me for another name and use it instead of my-frogbot from here on.
4. Go into the my-frogbot folder and read the FrogBot skill before changing anything. AGENTS.md tells you where it is (CLAUDE.md for Claude Code, GEMINI.md for Gemini CLI, .github/copilot-instructions.md for GitHub Copilot). If the skill is missing, run npx skills add frogbotai/frogbot --skill frogbot --yes in that folder.
5. The app needs my AI provider key in the .env file in my-frogbot (OPENAI\_API\_KEY, ANTHROPIC\_API\_KEY, or GOOGLE\_GENERATIVE\_AI\_API\_KEY). Ask me how I want to set it up.
6. Start the app by running npm run dev in my-frogbot and keep it running. If you cannot keep it running, tell me exactly how to run it myself in a terminal.
7. When it is ready, tell me to open [http://localhost:3000](http://localhost:3000) and create my admin account. Then I open Chats in the sidebar and create a new chat to send my first message.

If anything fails, explain the error in plain words and fix it. For FrogBot questions, use the skill first, then [https://docs.frogbot.ai/llms.txt](https://docs.frogbot.ai/llms.txt).

## What the agent does

1. Checks that Node.js 24.21 or newer is installed, and sends you to the download page if it is not.
2. Asks which AI provider key you have: OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. If you have none, it sends you to create an OpenAI key.
3. Creates the app in a `my-frogbot` folder with `create-frogbot-app`, which also installs the FrogBot skill for that agent. If the folder already exists, it asks you for another name.
4. Reads the FrogBot skill, so it knows how FrogBot apps work before it changes anything.
5. Asks how you want to add your AI key. The key goes in the `.env` file inside the app folder, which the app's `.gitignore` keeps out of Git. `create-frogbot-app` does not copy a key that is already set in the agent's environment, so this step is still needed.
6. Starts the app with `npm run dev`. If it cannot keep the app running, it tells you how to start it yourself.
7. Tells you to open [http://localhost:3000](http://localhost:3000) and create your admin account. You then open **Chats** in the sidebar and select **Create New** to send your first message.

## What your agent will ask you

Most coding agents ask before they run a command, use the internet, or keep a program running. Expect requests to:

* Run `node --version`, `npx create-frogbot-app@latest`, and `npm run dev`.
* Download packages from the internet while the app is created.
* Keep the development server running in the background.

Allow them so the setup can finish. The agent also stops to ask which AI key you have and how you want to add it.

## Which agent value to use

The prompt tells the agent to pick its own value for `--agents`. This table shows what each one installs:

| Coding agent | `--agents` value | Skill directory | Instruction file |
| - | - | - | - |
| Codex | `codex` | `.agents/skills/frogbot/` | `AGENTS.md` |
| Claude Code | `claude` | `.claude/skills/frogbot/` | `CLAUDE.md` |
| Cursor | `cursor` | `.agents/skills/frogbot/` | `AGENTS.md` |
| opencode | `opencode` | `.agents/skills/frogbot/` | `AGENTS.md` |
| GitHub Copilot | `copilot` | `.agents/skills/frogbot/` | `.github/copilot-instructions.md` |
| Gemini CLI | `gemini` | `.agents/skills/frogbot/` | `GEMINI.md` |

If the skill is missing, the prompt tells the agent to install it from GitHub with `npx skills add frogbotai/frogbot --skill frogbot --yes`. See [Coding agents](https://docs.frogbot.ai/skills/coding-agents.md) for every way to install the skill.
